Shirley Greer Obituary 11/18/28 - 11/30/18
Shirley L. Greer of Edwardsville, IL passed away peacefully in her sleep after a long battle with congestive heart failure (CHF) on November 30, 2018 at Liberty Village Nursing Home in Maryville, IL. She was a smart, beautiful, confident, independent and progressive woman who was very active in her community. She was born the daughter of Marjorie L. Davis and Rodney W. Drugg, in Winchester, NH on November 18, 1928. She and her brother (Donald Drugg) grew up on a family farm in Keene, NH. They were raised through the depression years by her beloved grandmother Addie Foster. As a girl she used to doctor the animals on the farm and play in the forest. She also loved to skate on the lake in the winter.
Shirley graduated from high school in 1946 and went on to study at Boston State College where she graduated in 1950. During spring break that year she met the love of her life James D. Greer who was a baseball player in the Cardinals farm team organization. From 1951-1954, Shirley and Jim met during spring training in Daytona Beach, Florida. After a career ending knee injury Jim and Shirley were married and settled in Madison, IL because Jim’s father A.D. Greer worked at the steel mill in Granite City, IL.

From 1955-1960, Shirley worked at Carps and settled on 1546 6th Street in Madison where she raised her two sons Jay Greer and Kerry Greer. Shirley was a teacher at St. Mary’s school (3rd, 5th, and 7th grade as well as cheerleading and gymnastics) for over 20 years (60’s-70’s. She would be most remembered for leading a project to paint all the fire hydrants in the city of Madison and that effort made national news.
She was the administrator of the Recreation Center in Madison in the 80’s. During this time, she coached 3rd street softball, exercise classes, and held elderly care and teen dances. She also was diagnosed with bladder cancer during this time, survived it, and retired to a lake community in Holiday Shores in the 90’s. In her retirement, she raised 7 grandkids and 2 great grandkids along with her many beloved cats. She had many hobbies including bowling and piano in the earlier years and swimming, sunning, and reading in her later years. She was a natural teacher and enjoyed tutoring her grandkids very much. She was spry with all her memories until the very end and recently had a wonderful 90th birthday party surrounded by many of her loved ones.

Shirley was preceded in death by parents, brother, her husband James D. Greer, and their son Jay K. Greer (Betty Greer).

Shirley is survived by her son Kerry M. Greer (Beth Greer) and several grandchildren Kevin Greer, Jaden Greer, Julian Greer, Joshua Greer, Janel Greer, Jayme Greer, and Jenna Greer. She had 2 great grandchildren Kosten Greer and August Wheeler.

Her wishes were to be cremated, and a graveside service will be held 3:00 p.m. on Friday, December 28, 2018, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, with Father Paul Bonk officiating. There will then be a celebration of life party from 5-8pm in Polish Hall in Madison, IL. In lieu of flowers, Shirley asked that you make a donation to the Humane Society where she donated yearly.
