Jerry Wayne Legate, age 70, of Granite City, IL, passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at his home, with his family by his side. Jerry was born on March 5, 1947 in Granite City, IL, a son of the late John Elbert Legate and Pauline (Self) Legate Gibson.
Jerry was a Vietnam Veteran who proudly served his country in the United States Army. On July 26, 1974, Jerry married Judith Ann Freeman, the love of his life in Granite City, IL. He had retired from Dow Chemical in Madison, IL after thirty years of dedicated service. After retiring, Jerry went to work at the National Guard Armory in East St. Louis, IL as a grounds keeper. In his younger years, he enjoyed going fishing and hunting. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren, whom he adored. Jerry will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his step-father, Floyd Gibson; and by four brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Judith Ann Legate of Granite City, IL; loving children, John Freeman of Missouri and Jeff (Jasmine) Legate of Granite City, IL; dear sisters, Joyce Danner and Peggy Sue Collins both of New Jersey; proud grandfather to Jessica, Samantha, Christopher, Elizabeth, Rebecca and Alex; extended family and many dear friends.
In celebration of his life, graveside services will be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO, with full military honors at a later date.
