Elvis A. "Hap" Chandler, 91 of Granite City passed away on Friday, May 31, 2013 at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City with his family by his side. Elvis was born on March 5, 1922 in Dover, TN to the late Fred and Manie (Farless) Chandler. The United States Army Infantryman proudly served his country during WW II. He served in combat in the "Battle of the Bulge" where he earned an Overseas Service Bar, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the WW II Victory Medal. After his service during the war he came back to Granite City to start his business known as Technical Task Force where he was the owner and draftsman. He was a member of Granite City First Assembly of God where he served as a deacon. He will be remembered for the love of his family and the many special times shared together.
He is survived by and will be missed by his wife; Wanda (Gibbs) Chandler, whom he married on December 22, 1996; daughters, Margaret A. and (Don) Stephens of Sun City, AZ, Judy and (Bryan) Gore of Edwardsville, IL; 5 grandchildren, Terry and (Marla) Stephens, Amy and (Robert) Carter, Brian and (Brenda) Stephens, Jim Martin, Cassie and (Nick) Johnson; 9 great-grandchildren, Justin Stephens, Michael Stephens, Dylan Johnson, Elizabeth Stephens, William Stephens, Eric Martin, Taylor Martin, Austin Carter, Allison Carter; 2 great-great-grandchildren, Brody Stephens, Cameron Stephens; brothers, James "Red" Chandler, Paul "Teanee" Chandler; step-children, Bob and Pat Renicke II, Marc and Nancy Renicke, Dennis and Dana Renicke-Elledge and many step grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his 1st wife; Helen I. Chandler; his son, Robert Wayne Chandler; 2 brothers, Charles and Claude Chandler.
Friends may call on Monday, June 3, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. In Celebration of his life services will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Rich Smallie officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon with full military rites. Memorials are suggested to Granite City First Assembly of God, 2317 Madison Ave. Granite City, IL 62040.
