Sidney Joseph "Joe" Wallace, 58, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 10:10 p.m. on Friday, February 22, 2013 at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City.

He was born August 9, 1954 in Granite City, a son of the late James and Shirley (Winters) Wallace.

He married Ellen R. (Zelenka) Wallace on June 19, 1981 at the former Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granite City and she survives.

He was a laborer with the Metro East Sanitary District with 30 years of dedicated service and was proud to be a member of the Teamsters Local #525 in Alton. He was a member of the Granite City Eagles Aerie #1126 and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City. Joe was an avid sports fan was active throughout his life supporting and coaching youth sports in Granite City. He was inducted in the Granite City Sports Hall of Fame, helped begin the flag football with the Park District and took the I.H.S.A. Granite City Warriors Basketball team to the Sweet Sixteen in 1971. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.

In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by a daughter, Jessica (Kevin) Elliott of Granite City; a son, Ted (Lesley Rivenburgh) Wallace of Granite City; two grandchildren, Emma and Camden Elliott of Granite City; one sister, Micki (John) Bucks of Granite City; one brother, Jerry (Bonny) Wallace of Trinity, Florida; mother-in-law, Elaine Zelenka of St. Peters, Missouri; four sisters-in-law, Debbie Wallace of Granite City, Cynthia Zelenka of St. Peters, Missouri, Michele (Matt) Tapling of Lincoln, Nebraska and Nicole Zelenka (James) Golab of Austin, Texas; many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Robert Wallace, brother, Tim Wallace; two sisters, Madonna Ryan and Molly Rahman; father-in-law, Thomas Zelenka and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Zelenka.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Thursday, February 28, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

A funeral mass will be at Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City on Friday, March 1, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Jeff Holtman as celebrant.

Burial will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville.

Memorials may be made to the Granite City Park District to support youth programs and may be accepted at the funeral home.
