Obituary

The Reverend Victor Eugene Ramsey (Sr.), 86, of Glen Carbon, IL, died February 27, 2012 at home. He
was born February 2, 1926 in rural Martinsville, IL the son of Preston and Edith (Houser) Ramsey.
He married Margaret Annette Cook June 7, 1951; they would later divorce. He married a second time to
Bettie Jane Noll Duncan April 8, 1988.
Reverend Ramsey was a 1944 graduate of Robinson Township High School. He served in the U.S. Navy
at the end of World War II and as a member of the occupying forces in Japan. He also served as acting
chaplain aboard ship leading his first worship service in preparation for what was supposed to have
been an invasion of Japan prior to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A typhoon delayed his ship's
arrival, probably saving everyone's life, and on his return to the US Ramsey made the ministry his life's
vocation.
Ramsey was a graduate of DePauw University (Greencastle, IN) and Christian Theological Seminary at Butler University in Indianapolis, IN. He was ordained an elder in the Methodist Church in 1956 and
served churches in both Indiana and Illinois until his retirement in 1988.
In addition to serving as a pastor, Ramsey was also a member of the original Television Workshop, a
delegate to the World Council of Churches, a writer for the Christian Advocate and Together magazines,
and a nationally accredited press correspondent. Though he received awards for both evangelism and
public relations, and was listed in two different editions of Who's Who, he was proudest of helping to
establish a viable mental health program in Ford County, Illinois. In retirement he continued to devote
himself to community and mental health issues serving as a counselor on the staff of Hoyleton Youth
and Family Services in East St. Louis.
Other activities and interests include serving as a Cub Scoutmaster, members of Lions Club, member of
Faith In Action, an active member of Men's Hall Alumni Association at DePauw University, a volunteer
chaplain at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, and he was recognized as honorary pastor emeritus at New
Bethel United Methodist Church in Glen Carbon where he was active up until his death.
Rev. Ramsey is survived by two sons and their wives Gene (and Mary) Ramsey of Carmi and Brian C.
(and Annamarie) Ramsey of Matteson; grandchildren Rebecca Rodeffer, Brian Ramsey, Hoa Vong, Taylor
Ramsey, Chase Ramsey, Parker Ramsey, and Payton Ramsey; and seven great-grandchildren along with
extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, and a brother Donald.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be at New Bethel United Methodist Church, 133 North Main Street in Glen Carbon on Friday, March 2, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. until time of funeral service at 4:00 p.m. with Reverend Bill Adams officiating.
Burial with military honors will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Robinson Township New Cemetery in Robinson, Illinois.
