Richard Sturdivant 87, of Granite City passed away on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at Stearns Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Granite City. Richard was born on June 5, 1924 in Granite City, IL. He was a long time equipment operator for the U.S. government, retiring in 1979. The United States Army Veteran proudly served his country during WW II, earning the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for valor. He was a member of Second Baptist Church in Granite City and enjoyed playing golf with his family and friends. He will be remembered for the love of his family and the many special times shared together.
He is survived by and will be missed by his sons; Gary & (Carol) Sturdivant of Granite City, Gary & (Pamela) Stieglitz of Granite City; daughter, Deborah & (David) Doughty of Caseyville, IL; grandchildren, Chris & (Hollie) Sturdivant, Greg Sturdivant, Chad & (Amy) Doughty, Bobby & (Marsha) Stieglitz, Michelle & (Chuck) Mann; 17 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; Donna M. (Sawyer) Sturdivant, whom he married on May 8, 1959 and who passed from this life on June 13, 1997; his parents, Romie & Elsie (Roberts) Sturdivant; 2 brothers, Charles & Robert Sturdivant.
Friends may call on Thursday, March 1, 2012 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, March 2, 2012 at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Carl Watkins officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon with military rites. Memorials are suggested to Gateway Hospice or the Alzheimer's Association.
