Obituary

Walter F. Aerne, 86, of Glen Carbon, Illinois passed away surrounded by family at 4:26 p.m. on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Illinois.

He was born April 22, 1930 in Granite City, Illinois, a son of the late Henry O. and Rose M. (DeGonia) Aerne.

He married Lucile E. (Colin) Aerne on May 19, 2007 in Glen Carbon and she survives.

He was the co-founder and owner of AMSCO Mechanical, Inc. in Granite City. For 30 years he served as president of Great Southwestern Illinois Association of Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Contractors which subsequently created the Walt Aerne Leadership Award to recognize significant leadership contributors to the organization. He was also a member of the Illinois PHCC and served as the chairman of the state-wide convention for many years. Walt served as a trustee for the Plumbers Local #360 and Steamfitters Local #439.

The Korean War veteran proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1951 to 1953, active with the U.S. Marine Corps Band. His love of music and the trumpet continued throughout his lifetime.

He cherished his children and grandchildren and took much joy in being among his family and friends.

In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by three daughters, Jorja and husband, Kent Dickemann of Glen Carbon, Jo Aerne of Oregon, and Debra Aerne and Kristopher Loewe of Glen Carbon; a son, David and wife, Melissa Aerne of Portland, Oregon; two step-sons, James Chambers of Rockford and Christopher and wife, Pam Chambers of Champaign; five grandchildren, Nathan and wife, Laura, Meagan and fiancé, Brent, Clayton, Dane and Caleb; honorary grandson, Josh; nine step-grandchildren, Ashley and husband, Brad, Katie, Gus, Caroline, Max, Olivia, Sam, Alyssa and Leslee; a great granddaughter Margo; a step-great granddaughter, Kendyll; many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Dean Aerne; grandson, Shane Aerne; two brothers, Clarence Aerne and Art Aerne and two sisters, Anna May Foster and Roselee Hoelter.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon, Illinois on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m..

Funeral services will be held Thursday February 16, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the same location with Reverend Christopher Chambers officiating.

Burial with full military honors will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.

Memorials may be made to St. John Community Care in Edwardsville / Collinsville or to VITAS Hospice and will be accepted at the funeral home.
