Wallace “Jack” Smith, 87 of Granite City, Illinois passed away on Friday, October 6, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.
Jack was born on January 31, 1930 in Pleasant Hill, Illinois; the son of the late Owen and Martha (Wilson) Smith. He was a machinist at Tara Corp in Granite City, retiring in 1992. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force in the Korean War and in his free time he enjoyed carpentry, fishing, playing his guitar and watching the St. Louis Cardinals. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by and will be missed by his wife; Pauline (White) Smith, whom he married on June 26, 1960; his children, Joyce Whistler, Barbara Stamps, Danny Allen, Melvin R. (Jeris) Allen, Christopher (Joyce) Smith, Erick (Michele) Smith, Dottie (Rick) Stephens, Dewayne (Christine) Smith, Dwight Smith (Beth); his 22 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his son; Darrell Allen; his son-in-law, James Whistler; brothers, Frank Smith, Jake Smith, Don Smith, Charles Smith; his sisters, Fern House, Peggy Loucks, Betty Applegate, Dorothy Bertram.
In celebration of Jack’s life friends may call on Monday, October 9, 2017 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a service at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Dale Barnhurst officiating at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. Burial with full military rites will be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis at a later date.
