Virgil E. Thurston of Collinsville, IL, entered into God’s rest on October 5, 2017. He passed away peacefully at his home in Collinsville, surrounded by his family. Virgil was born on June 25, 1927 in Granite City, IL. He was raised in Madison, IL until he joined the U.S. Navy during WWII, serving for two years as a Seabee in both Guam and Okinawa. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Virgil worked for 35 years at Granite City Steel as a Maintenance Supervisor in the Hot Strip area, retiring in 1982.
Prior to his death, he had served as an ordained minister with the Anchor Bay Ministry and for many years he led the song services at the Maryville Assembly of God Church. Virgil also enjoyed camping and traveling with his family and friends.
Virgil is survived by his wife Dorothy; daughters Linda (Frank) Mattea and Laura (Keith) Timmins; grandchildren Kristi (Ray) Baumann, Chad (Sara) Mattea and Jessica (Stephen) Huch; great-grandchildren Noah Baumann, Mattea Baumann, Kalli Baumann, Alexa Baumann, Isaac Mattea, Hanna Mattea, Ethan Mattea and Grace Huch; brothers David (Joani) Thurston and Phillip (Peggy) Thurston; sister Lois (Adams) Peterson; and step-children Jeffrey (Kathy) Cox and Susan (Brian) Lieberman; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother Minnie McPhail; father Arlie Thurston; brother and sister-in-law Arthur and Myrtle Thurston; and wife of 62-years, Dovie Thurston.
Viewing for Virgil will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on October 9, 2017 at Irwin Chapel Funeral Home at 591 Glen Crossing Rd, Glen Carbon, IL. A Celebration of Life Service will be held after the viewing starting at 11:00 a.m. The service will be officiated by Reverends Gene and Bonnie Etheridge of Van Buren, MO. Graveside service will be officiated by Rev. Ray Baumann at Valley View Cemetery, Edwardsville, IL.
Memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice will be accepted in honor of Virgil by the staff at the Irwin Chapel Funeral Home.
