Sylvia L. Zabawa, 76, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 12:10 p.m. on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at Rosewood Care Center in Edwardsville. She was born December 26, 1935 in East St. Louis, Illinois, a daughter of the late Edward and Anna (Skolmoski) Kmiecik. She married Norbert Zabawa in 1956 and he preceded her in death on December 22, 1987.
She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and also was a cook in the parish school cafeteria and was the cook preparing meals for the parish priests. She enjoyed her days of traveling and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with her family and friends.
She is survived by five sons, Frank (Lisa) Zabawa of Granite City, Richard (Rose Marie) Zabawa of Collinsville, Rob Zabawa of Granite City, Mark (Beth) Zabawa of Lake St. Louis, Missouri and Walter (Kim) Zabawa of Troy; one daughter, Sandra (Richard) Koishor of Granite City; nine grandchildren, Melissa (John) Duncan, Michael Koishor, Rebecca, Luke, Conner, Colbey, Kylie, Andrew and Sarah Zabawa; sisters, Pat Snyder and Christine Williams; brother, Edward Kmiecik; other extended family and friends.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 5:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church and may be accepted at the funeral home.
