Shirley Kay Yarbrough, 71, of Collinsville, Illinois passed away 4:30 a.m. on Friday, February 17, 2017 at Granite Nursing and Rehabilitation in Granite City.
Shirley would like to let you know that her work here is done. She received a call, a sort of offer you can't refuse, for an appointment from which she will not be returning.
This assignment comes with a huge sign on bonus; a reunion with family, dad and mom, Melton and Alma (Thornton) Johnson, whom she was born to on October 15, 1945 in Birds Point, Missouri, along with her daughter, Carrie Filter; brother, Marvin Johnson; her pet chow, KeeKee and many friends she has not seen in a long time.
Her new journey takes her to a wonderful place. She left detailed instructions for her loyal husband, Cliff T. Yarbrough, whom she married on October 23, 1995 in Las Vegas, Nevada, along with her son, Stacy Filter of Collinsville; granddaughter, Leah (Joel) Deeke of Granite City; a sister, Fern (Tom) Boker of Granite City; two brothers, Lawrence Johnson of Lecanto, Florida and Dean (Linda) Johnson of Carbondale to celebrate her journey here, which has now been completed. She also leaves behind many nieces; nephews; other extended family and many friends.
She worked very hard all of her life. She was a gentle and charitable woman. The holidays were her favorite time of the year, and she looked forward to them all year long. She would always make more food than her family ever eats, and even though they told her that was too much food she would keep doing it anyways. She also enjoyed her days of needlework, playing computer games and shopping.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Sunday, February 19, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. until time of funeral service at 7:00 p.m. with Reverend Henry Crippen officiating.
A procession will leave Irwin Chapel on Monday at 10:00 a.m. leading to her place of rest at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
Memorials may be made to Friends of the St. Louis University Liver Center and may be accepted at the funeral home.
