Obituary

Former State Representative, Sam W. Wolf, age 97, of Granite City, IL, passed away on Friday, November 4, 2016 at Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton, IL. Sam was born in Venice, IL on January 4, 1919, a son of the late Earl and Elizabeth (Delaney) Wolf.

Sam was a World War II Army veteran who proudly served his country. He was inducted as a private in January, 1941 and discharged as a Chief Warrant Officer in December, 1945. Sam had served in both the Asiatic Pacific Theatre and European Theatre of Operation. On November 9, 1946, Sam married Mae Frank, the love of his life, and she passed away on March 1, 2013. Sam was the State Representative of the 56th District from 1974 to 1992. Sam was instrumental in having Belleville Area College name changed to South Western Illinois College and the Granite City Campus was named in his honor, Sam Wolf Granite City Campus. Sam was a S.W.I.C. Trustee, elected in 1995. He was past president of Granite City Real Estate Board and past president of Granite City Kiwanis Club. He was also a member and on the Board of Directors of Tri City Chamber of Commerce. He was elected delegate to Democratic Mid Term National Conference in December 1974; elected Democratic National Committeeman from Illinois in June, 1975; secretary-treasurer of Madison County Democratic Central Committee since 1970. He had also owned and operated a real estate and insurance business in Granite City, IL for many years. Sam loved life, he loved to laugh, but most of all he loved his family. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his parents and wife, Sam was preceded in death by one son, Larry Wolf; brother, Carl Wolf and by a daughter-in-law, Charlotte Diane (Corder) Wolf.

He is survived by his loving son, Dave (Candy) Wolf of Granite City, IL; sister, Shirley Tretter of Granite City, IL; daughter-in-law, Susan Wolf of Collinsville, IL; proud grandfather of Renee Wolf of Granite City, IL, Damon (Rose) Wolf of Granite City, IL, Erin Wolf of Collinsville, IL, Dave (Sheila) Wolf of Granite City, IL, and Tanya Kennedy of Granite City, IL; proud great-grandfather of Megan Morse, Jake Wolf, J.D. Wolf, Mackenzie Kennedy and Gavin Kennedy; extended family and many dear friends.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road, Granite City, IL.

In celebration of his life, funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Irwin Chapel, Granite City, IL. Sam will be laid to rest next to Mae at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates, Glen Carbon, IL.

Memorial donations may be given to Alzheimer's Association and donations will be accepted at the funeral chapel.
