Richard Edward “Dick” Werths of Granite City born June 17, 1932, in Granite City, IL, the eldest son of the late Carl and Irma Werths, died Sunday, November 5, 2017. On August 30, 1952 he married Geraldine Perry who survives. From December 1952 through December 1954 he served with the US Army during the Korean War. In 1958 he joined the Granite City Fire Dept. and retired in 1983 at the rank of Captain. From 1988 to 1999 Dick and Gerry lived in Lebanon, MO near Bennett Spring State Park where they owned a fishing resort and taught their grandchildren to fish.
In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Keith Lucas. Survivors include his wife Gerry, daughters Carla (Larry) Griffin, Paula (George) Kaigh, Laura (Dan) Buehrer, and son Richard Alan (Kim) Werths. Also surviving are grandchildren Scott, Brian (Alicia), and Kyle Griffin; Anne Marie (John Stier) Lucas, Theresa (Boyd) Bradshaw, George III (Lisa) Kaigh, and Katie Kaigh; Steven and Aaron Werths; and Nicole (Luke) Gingery, Kelsey and Danielle Buehrer, fourteen great-grandchildren, brothers Gary Werths (Ric Frimmel) and Michael (Janet) Werths, in-laws, John and Kathy Foster, and several nieces and nephews.
Dick was an active member of Holy Family Parish, Knights of Columbus 1098, and enjoyed golf, gardening, woodworking, painting, fly-tying, and coaching his children’s teams.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road, Granite City, IL.
In celebration of his life, a funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at Holy Family Parish, 2606 Washington Ave. Granite City, IL, with Father Jeff Holtman officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Edwardsville, IL.
Memorial donations may be given to Holy Family Catholic School. Donations will be accepted at the funeral chapel.
