Melvin C. Wilmsmeyer, age 86, of Granite City, IL, passed away on Friday, August 18, 2017 at his home surrounded by family. Born February 18, 1931, in New Franklin, MO, he was the son of the late Emil and Johanna (Stratmann) Wilmsmeyer.
Melvin was a Korean War Veteran who proudly served in the United States Marines from 1952-1954. He was a National Bank Examiner until to moving to Granite City in 1965, where he became the President/CEO of First Granite City National Bank. After his retirement in 1993, he enjoyed spending time at his farm in New Douglas, IL and at the farm where he grew up in New Franklin, MO. Melvin also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was very active in the Granite City community.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Janet (Klenklen) Wilmsmeyer; along with eight children; Daniel (Diana) Wilmsmeyer, Douglas (Tracy) Wilmsmeyer, David (Jennifer) Wilmsmeyer, Donna (Todd) Burns, Deanne (Frank) Laub, Dennis (Julie) Wilmsmeyer, Debra Wilmsmeyer, and Darla (Lindell) Bishop; 22 grandchildren, Kyle (Amanda) Wilmsmeyer, Katie (Ben) Martin, Corey (Jennifer) Wilmsmeyer, Emilee (Scott) Dufford, Matthew (Amanda) Wilmsmeyer, Kelsey (Zach) Jarvis, Loree (Will) Carvelot, Marcus (Carrie) Wilmsmeyer, Kari Laub, Miranda Wilmsmeyer, Nicholas, Jacob, Olivia, Analiese, Ella, Isabella, Joshua, Nathan, and Benjamin Wilmsmeyer, Luke Wilmsmeyer, Hannah and Jonah Bishop; 7 great grandchildren, Lily & Hunter Wilmsmeyer, Sophia & Evie Jo Martin, Delaney & McKinley Dufford and Kenny Wilmsmeyer; and 4 siblings, Hugo (Donna) Wilmsmeyer, Ruth (Jerry) Watson, Ralph Wilmsmeyer and Helen (Darrell) Oser; as well as in-laws, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Rosalie Schupp and Mildred Wilmsmeyer and his brother Richard Wilmsmeyer.
Visitation will be held from 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road, Granite City, IL.
In celebration of his life, funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Granite City, IL, with Father Chris Comerford officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Edwardsville, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to St. Elizabeth Health Foundation and donations will be accepted at the funeral chapel.
