Max Dan Sullivan, 84 of Glen Carbon passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at Anderson Hospital. Max was born in 1934 in Murphysboro, IL; the son of the late Charles Lewis and Lula Clark Sullivan Emerson.
Max served in the United States Air Force for 4 years then went on to serve 16 years as a United States Army Chaplain, retiring in 1984 earning the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He proudly served in the Vietnam War where he earned a Silver Star, a Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, an Air Medal, an Army Commendation Medal, a Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, a National Service Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, a Army Service Ribbon, an Overseas Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit. He was a member of Our Lord’s Lutheran Church in Maryville and in his free time Max enjoyed his days of playing pool and volunteering at John A. Logan Museum in Murphysboro. Most of all Max loved to spend time with his family and will be remembered for all the special times they shared together.
Max is survived by and will be missed by his wife; Joann F. Sullivan of Glen Carbon, IL; children, Bruce (Robin) Sullivan of Bend, OR, Beverly Goff of Glen Carbon, IL Scott (Nancy) Sullivan of Decatur, IL, Stephen (Dawn) Sullivan of Shawnee, KS; 8 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; twin sister, Maxine Leydon of Murphysboro, IL; brother, Carroll (Jo Alice) Sullivan of Vienna, VA.
In addition to his parents, Max was preceded in death by his brothers; Charles, Kenneth and Sam Sullivan.
In celebration of Max’s life friends may call on Saturday, March 9, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Paul Park officiating at Our Lord’s Lutheran Church, 150 Wilma Dr. in Maryville. A family burial will follow on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 with full military honors at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Memorial donations are suggested to Our Lord’s Lutheran Church. Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon is serving the family.
