R. Leann Zerkel, 50, of Glen Carbon, Illinois passed away at 10:50 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at St. Mary's Health Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
She was born September 12, 1963 in Douglas, Georgia, the daughter of Mary Jane (Robertson) Stokes and the late Douglas L. Stokes Sr.
She married Dennis H. Zerkel on April 17, 1982 at the Meadow Heights Baptist Church in Collinsville and he survives.
She was the Vice President of Nursing at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis with over 30 years of dedicated service. She was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church in Edwardsville where she was the chair of the personnel committee and assisted with the hospitality committee. She had accomplished two Masters Degrees and loved learning to play the violin. She was very devoted to her faith in God and her devotion and love for her patients and co-workers. She enjoyed her days of reading and traveling and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with her family and friends.
In addition to her beloved husband and mother, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Emelia and Justin Proctor; one son, Michael Zerkel; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Douglas L. and Dora Stokes Jr. and Mark A. and Roberta Stokes;
other extended family and many friends.
In addition to her father,
she was preceded in death by one brother, Randy "James" Stokes.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon on Saturday, November 9, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at Calvary Baptist Church, 2249 South State Route 157 in Edwardsville on Sunday, November 10, 2013 from 1:30 p.m. until time of funeral service at 2:30 p.m. with Reverend Rob Schneider officiating.
Private family burial will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon on Monday.
Memorials may be made to the Cardinal Glennon Foundation Nephrology Department and may be accepted at the funeral home.
