John William Papa, 92, of Madison, Illinois passed away at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, August 18, 2017 at Stearns Nursing and Rehabilitation in Granite City.
He was born July 29, 1925 in Madison, a son of the late John Thomas and Helen (Zarr) Papa.
He married Louise Beatrice (Shable) at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Madison and she survives.
He retired from Granite City Steel after over 30 years of service as a steelworker.
He was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Madison where he was active with the Men’s Booster Club. He enjoyed his many years helping with the Pig and Lamb Roast and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Tri-Cities Council #1098 in Granite City. He served his country with the United States Navy during World War II.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, John Papa and Pat Edwards of St. Louis, Francis and Lisa Papa of Glen Carbon and Christopher and Michelle Papa of Evanston; six grandchildren, Jessica, Jake, Karlo, Lena, Luka and Lilly; two great grandchildren, Scarlett and Henry; a brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence “Larry” and Susan Papa of Decatur; two sisters-in-law, Jackie Papa of Bethalto and Pat Papa of Godfrey; several nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Francis, Robert, George, Rudy, William and Joseph.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Monday, August 21, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Madison on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Jeff Holtman as celebrant.
Burial will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Church or to Hospice of Southern Illinois and may be accepted at the funeral home.
