Obituary

John F. “Hank” Hillmer Sr., age 88, of Madison, IL, passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Jefferson Barracks VA Medical Center, St. Louis, MO. John was born on December 18, 1929 in Granite City, IL, a son of the late Harry Hillmer Sr. and Nellie (Hawkins) Hillmer.

John was a Korean War Veteran who proudly served his country in the United States Marines and the United States Navy. On December 29, 1961, John married Norma Hinson, the love of his life, in Madison, IL. John was a member of Venice Madison American Legion Post 307, Madison AmVets Post 204 and Granite City VFW Post 1300. He enjoyed marching in parades with the American Legion. He also enjoyed gardening, hanging out with his friends at Ernie & Annies and eating at Apple Tree Restaurant in Granite City, IL. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren, whom he adored. John loved life, he loved to laugh, but most of all he loved his family. John will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his daughter, Jan Juhnke; and by his siblings, Betty Powers, Harold Hillmer, Richard Hillmer, Robert Hillmer, Raymond Hillmer, Kendall Hillmer Sr. and Harry Hillmer Jr.

John is survived by his devoted wife, Norma Hillmer of Madison, IL; loving children, John Hillmer Jr., of Highland, CA and Keith Hillmer of Branson, MO; proud grandfather to seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a great-grandson on the way; two great-great-grandchildren; beloved dog, Lucie; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road, Granite City, IL.
