James W. “Bill” Griffey, 82, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 11:55 a.m. on Monday, January 15, 2018 at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City.
He was born November 7, 1935 in Bon Aqua, Tennessee, the son of the late William Marcus and Roxie Gertrude (Douglas) Griffey.
He married Rosalie (Thing) Griffey on October 18, 1958 in Granite City and she survives.
The United States Army veteran had worked as a laborer with several companies throughout the years. He was an avid and talented woodworker and enjoyed showing his work at many craft fairs for many years. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed the many trips he took them on. He was always tending to his house and yard and enjoyed the days of attending Solid Rock Free Methodist Church in Pontoon Beach. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his entire family and many friends.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Angela and David Bigham of Collinsville and Lisa Gamble of Granite City; four grandchildren and their spouses, Brad and Rachel Bigham, Michael and Lindsey Bigham, Shelby and Nate Rozycki and Jacob Gamble; a great grandson, Hendrix David Bigham; a sister, Phyllis Lane of Dover, Tennessee; many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, James Scott Griffey.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Friday, January 19, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. where funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Michael Aden officiating.
Burial will follow at Union Miner’s Cemetery in Mt. Olive, Illinois.
Memorials may be made to Solid Rock Free Methodist Church and may be accepted at the funeral home.
