James W. Arnett 79, of Granite City passed from this life on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Relais Bonne Eau in Edwardsville. Jim was born on January 30, 1932 in Danville, TN to parents Laddie and Nell (Cathy) Arnett Montgomery.
He retired from Granite City Steel after working 38 ½ years as a Millwright. He proudly served his country in the Navy during the Korean conflict. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was active in Sunday Bible Study.
Jim had many accomplishments: Boy Scout leader at the Presbyterian Church in Granite City, Graduated Granite City High School class of 1950, active in Amateur Boxing and boxed in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. Jim loved flying and was a flying instructor at Parks College. He also was an avid cyclist and toured numerous countries during this time. He also loved scuba diving receiving his certificate at the age of 48. During retirement he worked several years for Butch Peterson in the auto industry. He could be found every morning at Petri's Café where he shared special times and stories with family and friends.
Surviving is his wife Barbara nee: Battles Arnett who was married on May 31, 1997 at Calvary Baptist Church in Granite City, IL. Two step children Darren Battles, his wife Kansas and children Bobby and Sammy of Carlyle, IL; Tammy Laycock and sons of Oklahoma. He was adored by his mother-in-law Betty Swearingin of Granite City, IL; A daughter-in-law Donna Weeks two sister-in-laws Patty Swearingin and Vickie Heindricks; 4 grandchildren, Travis Weeks, Corey Weeks, Beau Weeks, Becky Weeks; 8 step-grandchildren; Bobby, Sammy, Brandon, Joshua, Caleb, Travis Jon, Will, Shane; 4 great-grand, Fletcher, Chance, Caleb, Lucas Close personal friends, Clarence "Peck" Wood and Bill Shable.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Jeff Weeks and sister; June Peck.
Visitation will be held Sunday, May 1, 2011from 5:00PM to 8:00PM at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road, Granite City, IL.
Services will be held on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 10:00 AM at Calvary Baptist Church, 3000 Washington Avenue, Granite City, IL with the Rev. Brian Smith officiating. Burial will be at the Roselawn Cemetery in Bethalto, IL.
