James E. Whistler, age 63, of Pontoon Beach, IL, passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at his home. Jim was born on December 5, 1950 in Granite City, IL, a son to the late Dorothy (Bojkovsky) Burtram.
Jim was a United States Army Vietnam Veteran who served two tours of duty with the 101st Airborne. On July 4, 1975, he married Joyce Allen, the love of his life in Granite City, IL. Jim had retired from Chrysler Corporation in St. Louis, MO after thirty-five years of dedicated service. He was also a proud member of the U.A.W. #136. Jim enjoyed going to the casinos and he loved all animals. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially with his three grandchildren whom he adored. Jim will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Burtram.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of thirty-eight years, Joyce Whistler of Pontoon Beach, IL; two dear children, Christy (Larry) Benz and Jeff (Amanda) Whistler, both of Granite City, IL; three adoring grandchildren, Casey Krohne, Chelsea Benz and Tyler Whistler; sister, Linda (Ken) Deal of Ellsa, IL; brother, Elvis Flowers of Granite City, IL; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jack and Pauline Smith of Granite City, IL; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Memorial visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Rd. Granite City, IL.
In celebration of his life, memorial services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at Irwin Chapel, Granite City, IL. Private family interment will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.
