Henry J Hellrich was born at his St Charles Missouri home on January 5, 1923.
Henry attended St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and grade school and then attended St Charles public high school and played the trumpet in the high school band.
After high school he joined the Army in January 1942, was part of the 44th Infantry Division and was deployed from Boston on Labor Day 1944 to France right after D-day. Henry was discharged as Private First Class in November 1945 and returned to St Charles.
Henry met Genevieve, his wife to be who was a nurse at a hospital, when he was sick and admitted to hospital for treatment. They were married February 9th, 1946.
Henry continue his education at the University of Missouri - Rolla and graduated with a Electrical Engineering degree in 1949. Henry retired from Granite City Steel Company in Jan 1978 as Superintendent of Utilities Department.
Henry was very active in the Boy Scouts at Sacred Heart Church Cub Scout Pack 18, Boy Scout Troop 18, and Explorer Post 94. After retirement Henry and Gen provided medical services at Boy Scout Camp Sunnen summer camp for more than 25 years. Henry and Gen were founding board members of Tri-Cities Area Association for the Handicapped and was active with the Organization for the Advancement of the Handicapped (OATH) and New Opportunities which provides services to developmentally and physically challenged adults of Madison County. Henry also volunteered with the AARP TaxAide program for over 25 years. Henry was active in multiple ministries with Sacred Heart / Holy Family Church and St Elizabeth churches.
Henry is survived by his children, Paul Hellrich of Granite City, Mark (Heidi) Hellrich of Pensacola, FL, Lenny (Dianne) Hellrich of Maryville, IL, Jim (Joyce) Hellrich of Glen Carbon, IL, Jeannine (Glenn) Simcock of Manjimup, Western Australia, and Margaret Hellrich of Granite City, 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Henry was preceded in death by his wife Genevieve of 59 years, two daughters Mary Ellen Barger and Edna Ann Watkins and his parents Henry L and Edna M Hellrich.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 19, 2018 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. In celebration of Henry’s life, funeral services will be held on Friday, April 20, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 2300 Pontoon Road in Granite City with Fr. Zach Edgar officiating. A Family burial to follow at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, April 20, 2018 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Cemetery in St. Charles, Missouri.
In lie of flowers, memorials may be made to New Opportunities of Granite City and Illinois Special Olympics of Normal, IL.
