Gary Lee Harris Jr., 56, of Glen Carbon and formerly of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 1:27 a.m. on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at his home.
He was born November 4, 1960 in Granite City, a son of Rose Porter of Collinsville and the late Gary Lee Harris Sr.
He married the love of his life, Kathleen C. (Gilley) Harris on July 5, 1980 in Granite City and she survives. Gary was an exceptional husband, father and grandfather.
He had received a Journeyman Carpenter Degree from Belleville Area College. He has worked with the Granite City School District #9 with 25 years of dedicated service in building maintenance and as a custodian. Gary’s family was his focus and love of his life. He loved taking care of his family, tending to his home and driving his collectible car. He was an exceptional craftsman and very talented with home renovations and construction of any sort. He always had a building project going on or plans to do, whether at his home or helping at a home of his sons. He enjoyed his days of boating and cherished his dogs, Tripp, Gracie Ann, Lucy and Emme.
In addition to his beloved wife of 37 years and his mother, he is survived by three sons, Craig Gilley Harris of Granite City, Chad Gilley Harris and fiancé, Renee Jerashen of Granite City and Trey Gilley Harris and wife, Molly Harris of Carterville; one grandson, Cash Lee Harris of Granite City; a sister, Kimberly Ann Harris of Collinsville; uncles and aunts, Bob and Judy Harris of Granbury, Texas and Karin and Gary Turnbull of Argyle, Texas; mother-in-law, Jo-Ann Gilley of Granite City; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Colleen and Paul Berends; three brothers-in-law, Toney, John and Michael Gilley; other extended family and many dear friends.
In celebration of his life, memorial visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Friday, September 8, 2017 from 3:00 p.m. until time of memorial service at 7:00 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the family to establish a college trust fund for his grandson, Cash.
