Evelyn Katherine Wiechman, 93, passed away at 5:20 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville with her family present.
She was born in the home of her great grandparents on Marine Road just outside of Edwardsville on September 25, 1922.
She was the oldest of three children. Her parents were Frank G. and Elsie (Bollinger) Viere. Some years later the family moved to the present Viere farm at Glen Carbon Crossing.
Her life evolved around family and Glen Carbon. She was very active in numerous organizations, commissions and activities. In 1998, she was a charter member of the Glen Carbon Seniors and president during 2000-2002. In 1975, she was appointed to fill a trustee position on the Village Board until 1989. She was the first woman to fill a trustee position in Glen Carbon. During her time as a trustee, she was on various committees including the Finance committee where she was a Chairman and also on the Police, Public Lands and Buildings committees. She wrote various grant programs for Glen Carbon. She was a member of the Park association, Library Committee, Historic Preservation Commission Centennial committee in 1992, History Museum and the Yanda Cabin. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and on the Board of Directors of Edwardsville Township Community Improvement Corp. She was a member of the Zonta Club, a professional women's service organization holding offices in the club, and a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and had served on their Finance committee. She received the Chamber of Commerce Athena Award in 1996.
She retired as an auditor in 1988 from the U.S. Treasury after 21 years of service. She had also worked for the Illinois Civil Defense. She was also employed for 15 years in private industry as an accountant.
She attended school in Glen Carbon and graduated from Edwardsville High School in 1940. She also attended Shurtleff College in Alton.
Evelyn had such a love of flowers and cherished and loved to share the history of our area. She will be remembered for the love and special times shared with her family and friends.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Jane and Ray Kerkemeyer of Edwardsville and Pamela Schmid of Coralville, Iowa; five grandchildren and their spouses, Laura Belville, John and Aimee Kerkemeyer, Jeff and Sheryl Kerkemeyer, Paul Schmid and Julie and Craig Giles; six great grandchildren, Ryan and Kyle Belville, Shane, Madison, Jozee and John Kerkemeyer; one brother, Earl Viere of Glen Carbon; other extended family and many friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Donald Schmid and a brother, Arnold Viere.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon on Friday, October 16, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Glen Carbon on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Al Allen as celebrant.
Burial will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville.
Memorials may be made as masses or to the Village of Glen Carbon in Memory of Evelyn and may be accepted at the funeral home.
