Ernest L. Withers, 90 of Granite City passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at Stearns Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Granite City. Ernest was born on June 14, 1921 in Spokane, WA. He worked at A.O. Smith as a press operator and material handler for 26 years and American Steel as the head crane operator for over 13 years; and at the Amoco Station on route 111 for over 7 years. He was a member of the Granite City First Church of the Nazarene where he served as a custodian, a Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent. He also gave 26 years as a custodian for Lots of Tots Dare Care Center. The U.S. Navy veteran proudly served his country during WW II, earning an American Area European African Medal with 1 star, Asiatic Pacific Medal, WW II Victory Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.
He is survived by and will be missed by his son; Lester D. & (Ruthan) Withers of Granite City; daughter, Melinda D. Morgan of Pontoon Beach; grandchildren, Dena Davis, Heather & (Don) Gallia, Christina & (Eric) Hill, Michael & (Amber) Withers, Chelsea Withers; great-grandchildren, Alexandra Hamm, Jake Hamm, Ashleigh Davis, Mara Withers, Emma Hill, Ava Gallia, Lila Gallia; daughter-in-law, Sherri McKinzie; brother-in-laws, Pete Sykes, William Sykes; sister-in-laws, Rebecca Yagow, Gloria Tellor, Lela Murphy, Joyce Dix. He was preceded in death by his wife; Betty June (Sykes) Withers, whom he married on November 18, 1949; parents, John & Delia Jewett (Hayes) Withers; son, Jeffrey Withers; grandson, Brannon Withers; sister, Lela Withers; sister-in-laws, Oletta Peppers, Phyllis Sykes, Rosella Beckley; brother-in-law, Don Sykes.
Friends may call on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. A celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Richard J. Unger officiating. Burial with military rites will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon. Memorials are suggested to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2001 S. Lindbergh Blvd. St. Louis, MO 63131-3597.
