Elmer Wayne Whitt, age 80, of Granite City, IL, formerly of Trenton, MO, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at Belleville Memorial Hospital, Belleville, IL. Elmer was born on October 29, 1936 in Davis County, MO, a son of the late Richard and Mary (Booram) Whitt.
Elmer was a United States Army veteran who proudly served his country. On April 4, 1959, Elmer married Anita Thompson, the love of his life, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granite City, IL. Elmer had retired from Nestle Corporation in Granite City, IL as a painter after many years of dedicated service. After retirement, Elmer and Anita moved to Trenton, MO, his hometown. After many years in Trenton, MO, they moved back to Granite City, IL to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Elmer enjoyed woodworking and gardening, his greatest joy was spending time with his family. Elmer loved life, he loved to laugh, but most of all he loved his family. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by one sister, Sonja Dale; two brothers, Gary and Richard Whitt; one nephew, Tracy Wynne and by his son-in-law, Bradley "Scott" Ryan.
He is survived by his devoted wife of fifty-seven years, Anita Whitt of Granite City, IL; loving children, Sheila Ryan and Kevin (Cindy) Whitt both of Granite City, IL; proud grandfather to Kristen Ryan, Taylor (Joey Wasser) Ryan and Jennifer Mell; proud grandfather to one great-grandson; dear siblings, Rocetia (Eugene) Hudson of Trenton, MO, Barbara Wynne of Brimson, MO and Victor (Cheryl) Whitt of Gillman City, MO; special niece, Dawn (Adam Briggs) McCormick; special great-niece, Bailey McCormick; beloved puppy, Daisy; extended family and many friends.
In celebration of his life, a memorial gathering will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Legacy Golf Course, 3500 Cargill Road, Granite City, IL, with Military Rites conducted by the United States Army at 2:00 p.m.
Memorial donations may be given to American Cancer Society and donations will be accepted at the memorial gathering.
