Eleanor Amend, of Madison, Illinois died on May 16, 2012, after a life well lived. She was 95. She worked for 24 years for the state of Illinois as a court reporter in the Madison County Courthouse, retiring in 1982. Among her other jobs she also taught elementary school in Madison after her graduation in 1938 from Fontbonne University in St. Louis. She lived in her family home in Madison from her birth August 30, 1916 until 2008, when she moved to Sycamore Village in Swansea, IL. She was able to stay in her home as long as she did thanks to her fierce independence, her strong Catholic faith and wonderful neighbors, especially Steve and Donna Hampsey. She is preceded in death by her parents John & Mathilda (Hensler) Amend, and her brother John Amend. She is survived by her sister-in-law Dorothy (Holder) Amend of Caseyville, IL; her niece Lori (Amend) Browning of Belleville, IL; her great nephew Jeffrey Browning of Sagamihara, Japan; and her dear friend Ann Polka of Belleville, IL. In celebration of her life visitation will be on Monday, May 21, 2012 from 4pm till 7pm at Irwin Chapel 3960 Maryville Rd Granite City, IL visitation will continue on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Madison, IL from 9am till funeral Mass time at 10am Father Dennis Voss officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville, IL. Memorials can be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church Roof Fund.
