Edward S. Barnes, 91 of Granite City passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family.
Edward was born on April 29, 1925 in Tennessee Ridge, TN; a son to the late Jones Harbel and Ellen Poyner (French) Barnes. Edward was a crane oiler at Granite City Steel for over 40 years, retiring in 1987. Edward was of Baptist faith and was a deacon at Hartford Baptist Church. Edward loved the outdoors where he enjoyed farming, raising chickens and rabbits. In his free time he loved to go to the casinos and play penny slots. But most of all he loved to spend time with his family and friends.
He is survived by and will be missed by his children; Deborah and (Richard) Vest of Granite City, Cecil Edward Barnes of Granite City, Cecilia and (Patrick) McKinney of Belleville, IL, Rhonda and (Marion) Hughes of Troy, MO, Timothy Reid Barnes of Granite City, Penny and (Richard) Wilson of Granite City, Tamara and (Gregory) Wofford of Collinsville, IL; grandchildren, Rodney Sampson, Jennifer Weathers, Cecil Barnes Jr., Kyle Smith, Jill Doebber, Carson Hughes, Rich Wilson, Theresa Smith, Joshua Wilson, Kelsey Wofford, Macey Wofford; 24 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents Edward was preceded in death by his wife; Edna Mae (Jones) Barnes, whom he married on January 8, 1949; his grandson, Roy Edward Barnes and all 8 of his brothers and sisters.
Friends may call on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. In celebration of Edward's life, services will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor David Denton officiating at the funeral home. Burial will follow with military rites at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon. Memorials are suggested to Bethesda Baptist Church, 3035 Nameoki Road in Granite City.
