Donald Leroy "Bub" Winnie Jr., 63, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 4:15 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at his home. He was born November 4, 1947 in Grandin, Missouri, a son of the late Donald Leroy and Marie Helen (Nance) Winnie Sr.
He retired in September 2004 from J.H. Berra Construction Company in St. Louis after 33 years of dedicated service as a laborer. The United States Army veteran proudly served his country during the Vietnam War and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and other medals and recognitions. He was an avid outdoorsman and had a special passion for deer hunting. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Melva Winnie of Granite City; son, Donald Leroy and wife Bernadette Winnie III of Fieldon; daughter, Kathy Winnie and fiancé, Shawn Phillips of Granite City; eight grandchildren, Anthony, Ryan, Jordan, Brittany, Kiley, Jadelynn, Scott and Sophia; three great grandchildren, Ayden, Khale and Raelynn; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Clara and John Mitchell, Donna and Leonard Johnson and Susie and Steve Holik; his beloved dog, Ernie; other extended family and many friends. In addition to his beloved parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ernie Winnie.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Thursday, October 20, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. where funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 21, 2011 with Reverend Lenny Johnson officiating. Burial with full military rites will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the family and may be accepted at the funeral home.
