Donald H. "Apple" Applegate, age 91, of Alton, Illinois passed away at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, 2011 at Meridian Village in Glen Carbon. He was born February 26, 1920 in Memphis, Tennessee, a son of the late James Howard "Shorty" and Laura May (Conner) Applegate. He married Juanita E. (Reeder) Applegate on June 28, 1941 in St. Charles, Missouri and she preceded him in death on June 15, 2006. Through their 65 years of marriage, they enjoyed their many days of traveling, mostly by train across the United States. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He retired in 1982 from Duncan Foundry and Machine Works in Alton after 42 years of dedicated service as a cost accountant. The United States Navy veteran proudly served his country and received a Purple Heart from his service during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post 126 in Alton for 66 years where he had served as a past commander, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1308 in Alton and the Disabled American Veterans. He had served as a director on the board of Duncan Foundry Employee Credit Union and enjoyed his days of coaching the American Legion baseball team. Donald was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan, enjoyed eating and visiting with friends at Ravanellis in Granite City and Fionas in Wood River and loved attracting many forms of wildlife by feeding the birds and raccoons at his home.
He is survived and will dearly be missed by his grandson whom he and Juanita raised and loved like their son, Curt Steele of Alton. This same love and devotion has been given back to Donald through the past years. In addition to their grandson, he is survived by one sister, Wanda Crews of Phoenix, Arizona; nephew, Leslie and wife, Lataua Applegate of Godfrey; niece, Sharon Hooper of Alton; great niece, Tawnya Hooper of Alton; two great nephews, Todd Applegate of Godfrey and Tommy Hooper of Alton; one great-great nephew, Reid Murray; sister-in-law, Ethel Scroggins of Alton; other nieces; nephews; extended family and many friends.
In addition to his beloved and cherished wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Dale C. Steele; one sister, Janice E. "Penny" Coon and one brother, James Applegate.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Sunday, July 17, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m..
Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Monday, July 18, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Charles West officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Upper Alton Cemetery in Alton. Memorials may be made to Hope Animal Rescues, 3701 Coronado, Alton, IL 62002 and may be accepted at the funeral home.
