Donald H. "Apple" Applegate, age 91, of Alton, Illinois passed away at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, 2011 at Meridian Village in Glen Carbon. He was born February 26, 1920 in Memphis, Tennessee, a son of the late James Howard "Shorty" and Laura May (Conner) Applegate. He married Juanita E. Through their 65 years of marriage, they enjoyed their many days of traveling, mostly by train across the United States. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He retired in 1982 from Duncan Foundry and Machine Works in Alton after 42 years of dedicated service as a cost accountant. The United States Navy veteran proudly served his country and received a Purple Heart from his service during World War II. He had served as a director on the board of Duncan Foundry Employee Credit Union and enjoyed his days of coaching the American Legion baseball team. Donald was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan, enjoyed eating and visiting with friends at Ravanellis in Granite City and Fionas in Wood River and loved attracting many forms of wildlife by feeding the birds and raccoons at his home.

He is survived and will dearly be missed by his grandson whom he and Juanita raised and loved like their son, Curt Steele of Alton.
