It is with great sadness the family of Daniel “Dan” Joseph Rujawitz, of Granite City, Illinois, announces his peaceful passing on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at the age of 78.
Dan was born in Belleville, Illinois. He proudly served in the United States Army during the post Korean War where he was deployed in both Europe and the Middle East. After he served his country, Dan worked at General Motors where he was a member of the UAW until his retirement. Post retirement from General Motors, Dan was a successful entrepreneur as owner-operator of DJ Rujawitz Trucking.
First and foremost family and friends meant everything to Dan. He was proud of his children and grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to be with them. Besides family, Dan had many interests and hobbies. He had a passion for classic cars and the 50’s. As Vice President of the Lakers Car Club and associate of the Gear Jammers and Piston Pushers car clubs, he could be seen regularly cruising with fellow car club members in his 1956 Chevy on a summer evening with a big smile on his face. Dan enjoyed his many travels out West and loved to tell you about the Badlands, Yellowstone, Montana, and Wyoming and his “close” encounters with bears and buffalo. He wasn’t much for a beach but he sure loved the mountains. Dan also enjoyed wildlife, working on cars, shooting his guns for sport, fishing, watching his grandkids play sports, telling one of his many Army stories, and watching an episode of Hogan’s Heroes or Andy Griffith.
Dan is survived by his children Tony (Lori) Rujawitz, Edwardsville, IL, Terry (Julie) Rujawitz, Edwardsville, IL, and Michael Rujawitz, Belleville, IL; grandchildren Lindsey, Tyler (Abbey), Tate, Tayler, Zac, and Olivia; and one great-grandchild (boy) whose blessed arrival is expected in August; loving friend and companion Judith Basarich and many other family and friends.
Dan was preceded in death by his loving wife of 41 years Janice, parents John and Frieda (Muskopf) Rujawitz, brother, John Rujawitz, and sister Connie Chapman.
In celebration of Dan’s life, visitation will be held on Monday, June 11, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon. Funeral services for Dan will be held on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home in Glen Carbon. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon with full military rites.
