Charles Francis "Chuck" Bakken, 68, of Collinsville, Illinois passed away at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 in Collinsville from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.
He was born August 20, 1944 in St. Paul, Minnesota, the son of the late Henry and Alice (Springer) Bakken. He was raised in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota.
He married Shelby Jean "Shelly" (Trigg) Bakken on December 22, 1988 at Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Maryville and she preceded him in death on June 1, 2012.
Chuck proudly served his country during Vietnam as Flying Crew Chief on C124 Globe Master. After 34 years of service at Scott Air Force Base, he was retired Air Force Reserves and Civil Service as Dock Chief from the 932nd Aero Med Maintenance Squadron. Most recently, he worked at Scott Air Force Base as an Aircraft Servicer. He was passionate about Catholic Faith and was a dedicated member and volunteer at Mother of Perpetual Help Parish in Maryville. He enjoyed playing golf and was an avid sports fan, especially supporting his home state of Minnesota. He was known as the man riding the Minnesota Vikings motorcycle. Chuck was there to help those in need, even those he did not know, always making new friends everywhere he went. He loved his family and friends and will be dearly missed.
Surviving are his son, Dan Bakken of Pittsburgh, Penn.; daughter and son-in-law, Charla and Steve Finn of Collinsville, Ill.; stepson and daughter-in-law, Monty Jones and Deidre Davenport of Weddington, N.C.; stepdaughter and her fiancee, Kym Jones and James Cowins of Ironton, Mo.; grandchildren, Miranda Foster, Melissa Smith, Matt Powell, Dayna Finn, Shane Finn, Amanda McCallister, Perri Jones, Samantha Finn; great-grandchildren, Mercedes, Madelyn, Kendon and Bennett; former wife, Virginia Bakken of Caseyville, Ill.; and many nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends. In addition to his beloved wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Patricia Johnson.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon on Friday, September 7, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Maryville on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Steve Sotiroff as celebrant.
Military honors and burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis on Monday, September 10, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. for those wishing to join there.
