Obituary

Bobby Joe Davis, 86, of Glen Carbon and formerly of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, September 29, 2017 at his home with his family at his side.

He was born March 23, 1931 in Springfield, Missouri, a son of the late Hillis Wilbur “Dodd” and Ethel Mae (Wright) Davis.

He married Ruth A. (Thomas) Davis on December 23, 1997 at the Alton Memorial Hospital Chapel in Alton.

He retired in 1995 after 41 years of dedicated service in Education. In 1954, he began his career in education as a History teacher and later becoming an Elementary Principal in Missouri. He became a Junior High Principal in 1960 with Granite City Community Unit #9, later serving as an Assistant Superintendent and retiring as the Superintendent of Schools in 1985. After his retirement, he served as the Interim Chancellor with Belleville Area College and served six years as the Provost for the Granite City and Red Bud Campuses.

Bobby Joe loved the outdoors and enjoyed his days of fishing, quail hunting and camping. He enjoyed playing chess and being with his family. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.

In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Cyndy Suzanne and Bruce Warning of Glen Carbon; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael Wayne and Laura Davis of Nicholasville, Kentucky; a step-daughter and son-in-law, Deidra Ann and William Hughes of Granite City; a step-son, Neil Schroeder of Edwardsville; five grandchildren and spouses, Courtney and Ryan Johnson of Chesterfield, Missouri, Casie and Daniel Tomczak of Annapolis, Maryland, Garrett and Hannah Davis of Louisville, Kentucky, Gavin Davis of Nicholasville, Kentucky and Abby Davis of Nicholasville, Kentucky; two great grandchildren, Jack Tomczak and Samantha Johnson; a sister-in-law, Vi Davis of Greenfield, Missouri; other extended family and many dear friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Max Davis.

In celebration of his life, a memorial visitation will be held at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 from 3:00 p.m. until time of memorial service at 7:00 p.m. with Garrett Davis and John Sikora officiating.

Inurnment will be at a later date at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.

Memorials may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, BJC Hospice of Alton or to a charity of one’s choice and may be accepted at the funeral home. www.irwinchapel.com
