Alice A. Ballhorn, 88, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 6:51 a.m. on Friday, April 5, 2013 in Granite City.
She was born December 14, 1924 in Beaufort, Missouri, a daughter of the late August and Caroline (Hoemann) Bargen.
She married John D. Ballhorn Sr. on November 16, 1946 at Messiah Lutheran Church in St. Louis and he preceded her in death on February 25, 1991.
She was a longtime member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Granite City where she was active with the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed her days of reading and watching the birds and squirrels and cherished spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She will be remembered for the love and special times shared with her family and friends.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Charles Smith of Granite City and Christine and Terry Collins of Granite City; one grandson, Jason (Stacie) Smith; two granddaughters, Lori Skinner and Julia Ballhorn; nine great grandchildren, Troy (Amber) Risinger, Seanna Risinger, Joshua Niles, Jacob Niles-Smith, Tricia Niles-Smith, Nathan Niles-Smith, Maryssa Norton, Bryce Norton, Isaac Conaway, Mariah Pate and Jessice Skinner; four great-great grandchildren, Ethan and Ian Risinger, McKenna Smith and Landon Skinner; three brothers, Edward Bargen of St. Charles, Missouri, August (Rosalie) Bargen Jr. of Washington, Missouri and Harold (Patsy) Bargen of New Haven, Missouri; three sisters, Mildred VanWinkle of St. Charles, Missouri, Marie Brown of St. Charles, Missouri and Lydia Groce of Beaufort, Missouri; many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends.
In addition to her beloved husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, John David Ballhorn Jr.; a grandson, John Smith; four brothers, Otto Bargen, Alvin Bargen, Ray Bargen and Oscar Bargen and one sister, Rose Bargen.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Sunday, April 7, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. where funeral services will be on Monday, April 8, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Brian Feicho officiating.
Burial will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.
Memorials may be made to Gateway Hospice or to Concordia Lutheran Church and may be accepted at the funeral home.
