Alfred Leavell, 78 of Granite City, Illinois passed away on Friday, October 27, 2017 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.
Alfred was born on October 23, 1939 in Harrisburg, Illinois; the son of the late Alfred and Helen (Potter) Leavell. Alfred earned his Bachelor of Science in Education in 1961 a Master’s Degree in 1966 from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and in 1972 a Doctorate of Education from Indiana University. Alfred taught with the Granite City Public Schools for 35 years and was Adjunct Professor at Southwestern Illinois College for 15 years. He was a member of the Granite City Elks Lodge 1063 were he served as Exalted Ruler in 2015, was a Phi Delta Kappa member since 1968 and the President of Gateway East Illinois Chapter, 1994-1995. Alfred will be remembered for the love of his family and all the special times they shared together.
He is survived by and will be missed by his wife of 48 years; Martha (Doran) Leavell of Granite City, Illinois; his children, Charles A. Leavell of Troy, Illinois, Cindy (Dan) Moad of Maryville, Illinois, Craig D. (Anne) Leavell of Glencoe, Illinois; his grandchildren, Brant, Trent, and Carsyn Moad, Brady, Noah and Griffin Leavell; his sisters, Isla Steele, Vera Prather, Bonnie (Ron) Moehle; his brother-in-law, Tom (Diane) Doran and many nieces, nephews and other close family friends.
Friends may call on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. In celebration of Alfred’s life, services will be held on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Fr. Jeff Holtman officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville. Memorials are suggested to the Children’s Care Corporation, Elks Lodge 1063 or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
