Obituary

Alfons Augustin, “Al,” “Oinaioar”, 56, originally from Pohnsemahk, Micronesia, has proudly called Granite City home for the past 15 years passed away at Gateway Regional Hospital in Granite City on Friday, November 24, 2017.

He was born September 12, 1961 in Pohnpei, Micronesia, a son of the late Bendura and Lihter (David) Augustin.

He and his surviving wife, Annaleen (Kephas) Augustin married in Guam on May 6, 1993.

The United States Navy veteran retired as a Machinist Mate First Class in 2007 after 20 years of dedicated service. After retiring from the Navy, Alfons went on to serve the Federal Government in the capacity of a Test Score Technician for the Military Entrance Processing Station, St. Louis where he was able to assist hundreds of men and women as they began their journey into the United States Military. He was the recipient of the Joint Service Achievement medal, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medals, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy “E” Ribbon, six Navy Good Conduct Medals, two National Defense Service medals, Armed Forces Expeditionary medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary medal, South West Asia Service medal with the Bronze Star and numerous other medals and recognitions.

Al was immensely proud of his Pohnpeian heritage and loved educating others about the island of Pohnpei as well as advocating for Micronesian immigrants. He enjoyed cooking, playing the ukulele, singing, dancing, travelling, and hiking. He cherished his dog, Ilok and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.

In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his children, daughter, Mary Immanuel; son, Jayson Hadley; daughter, Trevalova Alfons Augustin and fiancé, Branden Tanthavong; son Aeschylus Alfons Augustin; daughter, Triskaya Lihter Augustin; four grandchildren; three brothers, Albert, Abondios and Mahoney Augustin; a sister, Prihter Augustin; cousins, Joel and Maria Santos; special family friends, Doug and Lillian Tabbert and family; many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Friday, December 1, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 12:30 p.m. with Reverend Wihden Aise officiating.

Burial with full military honors will be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.

Memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans or to COFA Migrants Advocacy Project, with Mercy Health Foundation, 250 Mercy Drive, Dubuque, IA 52001 and may be accepted at the funeral home.
