Obituary

Mrs. Alberta Louis Schubert (nee Alexander), of Edwardsville, IL (formerly Granite City, IL), went to be with the angels on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at the age of 86.
Alberta was born to parents Arthur Noel and Francis Carolyn Alexander (nee Myers) on July 7, 1931 in Granite City, IL. She grew up in Granite City and attended the Granite City schools, graduating in the class of 1949. On July 4, 1953, she married Charles Louis Schubert at a ceremony at Trinity United Methodist Church in Granite City, IL. Charlie and Alberta had four children and lived in Granite City most of their lives.
Alberta volunteered her time for many years with different organizations including the Marshall School PTA, the Boy Scouts of America, and in different positions at various churches. In her younger years she worked at Southwestern Bell Telephone, Reynolds Metals, Norfolk & Western Railroad, Riche’s Women’s wear, and Famous-Barr. She worked many years for Glik’s Department stores as a store manager and buyer. She also worked at the Walmart Collinsville store for nine years. She made many friends in the retail business. She loved to tell stories about her travels to New York City as a buyer for Joe Glik. She knew her way around the city hailing cabs and riding subways. She would always tell us about the best cafés and restaurants in the garment district. Every trip to New York she would take in a Broadway show. The last eleven years she has resided in University Nursing and Rehabilitation where she made some fabulous friends! Over the years they spent many hours talking politics, playing bingo, attending Cardinal games, and taking outings to Walmart and various eateries. The family wants to thank the many staff for all you have done to make the end of her life enjoyable.
Alberta is survived by her daughter, Gail Dewald (John); her sons, Carl Schubert and Alan Schubert; her daughter-in-law Sheri Schubert; twelve grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters-in-law: Mary Ellen Schubert, Mildred Schubert, Virginia Grubb (Dean), and Theresa Alexander, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Schubert; her son, Charles (Chuck) Schubert; her parents, Noel and Carolyn; her brother, Pat Alexander; and her grandsons Cody and Dylan Schubert.
Her cremains will be interred at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Glen Carbon, IL. Friends may call on Saturday, May 26, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City with Pastor Alan Beuster officiating. If you are led to provide a donation in her honor, the family requests they be made to University Nursing and Rehabilitation (Edwardsville, IL), Renal Support Network, Muscular Dystrophy Association or a charity of your choice.
